Part 2 "What Kind of Supplements Should I Take?" – Ashley Koff FAQs

In part 2 of “What Supplements Should I Take?” Ashley Koff, RD addresses the supplements for better energy, digestive health, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. These nutrients are found in food but we may need to eat a lot of it to get the benefits. That is where supplementation would be a good thing because they deliver a higher concentration of quality nutrients
• A B-complex can give you a boost of energy when you are feeling that mid day slump.
• Certain spices like turmeric, ginger and cinnamon have a healthy inflammation response
• Antioxidants like Resveratrol protects against damage to our bodies that may increase our risk for certain diseases like cancer. Resveratrol is found in beverages like green tea and red wine.
• Therapeutic digestive enzymes can be helpful if you have any food allergies or intolerances, but this should be discussed with your health care provider prior to use.

Vitamin B-12 for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is Vitamin B-12?
Vitamin B-12 is a water soluble vitamin that must be obtained from your diet. It occurs naturally in some foods but also can be added to foods. Foods naturally high in B-12 are beef and beef liver, salmon, trout, clams, milk, and fortified breakfast cereals.

What does Vitamin B-12 do?
Vitamin B-12 plays important roles in your body’s biochemistry, like making DNA, proteins and fats. It is needed to make red blood cells and hemoglobin. Vitamin B-12 also plays an important role in fighting heart disease, and is needed for fat and protein metabolism. It also helps your body with energy metabolism and aids your physical endurance.

Are there side effects?
The National Institutes of Health says that reports were published showing Vitamin B-12 may be associated with psychosis and memory loss, but the NIH also reports that no solid evidence exists to support that. Likewise, there is no good evidence that Vitamin B-12 supplements can help improve ongoing cognitive damage.

What’s the right dose?
If you are deficient in Vitamin B-12 you can usually be treated with injections. That will bypass the barriers to vitamin absorption in your stomach and GI tract. However, the National Institutes of Health says oral supplements may also be effective, but such has not been confirmed. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of B-12 is 2.4 micrograms in normal men and women (over 14 years old).

Does it help with carpal tunnel syndrome?
The HIH reports that many doctors prescribe Vitamin B-12. However, the NIH also states that there is little or no evidence to support its benefits for carpal tunnel syndrome, in spite of many studies that have tried to link it to helping ease signs or symptoms.
