How to Get Kids to Listen

Why is it so hard for so many parents and teachers to get kids to do as they are told? Because too many adults have followed some very bad advice. Family psychologist John Rosemond offers some useful tips on how to get the little barbarians to listen.

Script:

When was the last time you heard a child referred to as obedient? It’s probably been a while. That’s too bad because the best research tells us that obedient children are happy children. And, from my experience as a family psychologist, the parents of obedient children are happy parents.

Since all parents want their children to be happy, the question becomes: How does one get a child to obey? Is there some trick to it?

Well, there are certainly are a lot of parents who think so. They believe that proper discipline is a matter of using the right methods, techniques, and strategies: what I call consequence delivery systems. Parents have been using these behavior-modification-based methods since they became popular in the 1960s – seemingly to no avail. Would anyone argue that today’s kids are more obedient than kids were several generations ago? I don’t think so. The reason these methods and techniques don’t work is that proper discipline is not a matter of proper methods. It’s a matter of a proper attitude on the part of the parent.

Let me illustrate the point. Let’s say that for a week I observe the classroom of a grade school teacher who has the reputation of being the best disciplinarian in her district. She consistently has fewer behavior problems than any of her colleagues. What is she doing? She’s making her expectations perfectly clear. Which means, first, she communicates in simple, declarative sentences. She doesn’t use fifty words when she could use ten. The more words you use to communicate your expectations, the less confident you sound.

Second, she prefaces her instructions to her students with authoritative phrases like “I want you to…” and “It’s time for you to…” She says, “It’s time for you to take out your math books and turn to page 25” as opposed to “Let’s take out our math books and turn to page 25. Okay?”

Third, this teacher does not explain the motives behind her instructions to her students. Why? Because she knows that explanations invite arguments.

Whenever parents tell me they’re dealing with an argumentative child I know that these well-intentioned people are explaining themselves. They tell their child why they want him to pick up his toys, for example. And he argues, because you can always pick apart an explanation. If you don’t explain yourself when you give an instruction to a child, then the child, being a child, is almost surely going to ask for one. He’s going to ask Why? or Why not? At which point… get ready for a big surprise… your answer should be “Because I said so.”

Iron Deficiency Dangers in Children

It’s a common health problem happening in children younger than 2 years old. Health experts say iron deficiency is completely preventable.

Dr. Emad Salman, a pediatrician with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, says children who are iron deficient look healthy but they are at risk for serious problems. “Iron deficiency is one of the number one cases we see every single year.”

He says lack of iron can lead to anemia which can then cause brain damage. “Iron is not just there in your body to make blood. It’s also there for a lot of other functions including brain cells. So they may develop mental damage that may be done very early in life because of iron deficiency,” said Dr. Salman.

While children who are iron deficient will typically have a normal body weight, they will be pale, tired, and have low energy. “The most typical child we see with iron deficiency is a toddler who is healthy looking because they have gained weight with milk which is very rich in nutrients, except iron. Cow’s milk, for example, is very poor in iron. If you have toddlers that are on a lot of milk and they’re not eating food then they have a higher risk of developing iron deficiency,” said Dr. Salman.

Children at risk for iron deficiency are those who are put on almond milk or regular milk too soon, or those who are born premature. “The last three months of pregnancy the baby stores a lot of iron so if your baby is premature they have a higher risk of developing iron deficiency,” said Dr. Salman.

He says children over the age of six months need to have vitamins or solid foods that contain iron, like cereal or meat. He says breast milk alone is not enough. Children between the ages of 15 months and 18 months are commonly diagnosed with iron deficiency, but once treated the problem can be cured within a few weeks.

Taking Energy Drinks to Heart

Those energy drinks many people gulp down without a second’s thought are giving doctors cause for concern.

“These are the drinks that have a very high concentration of caffeine and other ingredients whose affects we may not know for a long time,” says Dr. Murali Muppala, a cardiologist with Lee Memorial Health System.

A single energy drink may have three to five times the caffeine in a same-size can of soda. Although it occurs naturally in more than 60 plants including coffee beans, tea leaves, and some nuts, the FDA considers caffeine a drug because it stimulates the nervous system. But it is also classified as an additive, meaning manufacturers don’t have to include its amount on a label. And excessive caffeine is at the heart of the matter.

“All the medications that have a stimulant effect can make your heart go- number one faster and also makes your heart beat stronger. And if you take too much of it, it can make significant cardiac arrhythmias,” says Dr. Muppala.

A new report on substance abuse found trips to the emergency room involving energy drinks doubled between 2007 and 2011; the age group between 18 and 39 being the hardest hit. In about half of cases, the buzz was boosted by another drug or alcohol.

“When people drink energy drinks at the same time they’re drinking alcohol,l people may not realize how intoxicated they are even though they’ve been drinking significant quantities,” says Dr. Muppala.

Children and teens, hard-core energy drinkers and people with underlying heart conditions face the biggest risk. And the added boost of stimulant may push them over the edge.
